The Open House

True to our vision, we aim to offer shelter to all those who come to us with the will to join in. And so, at all times of the year, one of the houses, and in the summertime many of them, will be an 'Open House' under our care, where anybody, without warning, night or day, can turn up at the door, walk in and stay for a day, a week, a month – as long as he is prepared to join his efforts to those who are already there.
Already many years Lohra Castle has been such an Open House and also this year invites those who come along and like to stay.

Lohra Castle is one of the largest castles in Thuringia, its history dates back to the first millennium. The High Middle Ages were the main flowering period of the castle, when the Count of Lare extended the castle into a kind of palatinate. The most valuable report of art history is the Romanesque Double Chapel from the 12th century, one of the very few of this kind which still exist. Open Houses Network started to restore Lohra Castle in 1992 and has carried out a large number of art workshops, exhibitions, concerts and international meetings since then.

The tasks of a guest of the Open House at Lohra Castle are some little works and reparations that occur all the time, for example, to renovate furniture, to fix the doorbells, to insulate windows, to start and care for the fire in the oven. Gardening or cutting and transporting wood for the wintertime are important works to be done and also welcoming and taking care of Lohra Castle´s guest groups, which need an address person during their stay. The participants of the Open House can also help with the work in the workcamps and building weeks during the summer.

From the middle of June till the end of September international workcamps are going to take place at Lohra Castle. During that time it is possible to stay at Lohra Castle without interruption.
